Sturgeon Ventures launches service for charities
Short-termist investors who are negative on the bond market will miss great opportunities, according to Sturgeon Ventures, the regulatory incubator, which has launched a non-profit fixed income portfolio management service for charities that they believe are overlooked by large fund managers because they have less than £20m to invest.
It is Sturgeon’s view that policymakers will refrain from raising interest rates for some years to avoid killing off economic recovery while older investors and institutions seeking income will support the bond market in the long term.
Malta – AIFMD, Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive
On 25 June, 2013 the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) issued the final implementing measures for Malta’s transposition of the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (2011/61/EU) (AIFMD). The MFSA has been accepting applications for existing fund managers wishing to upgrade to full AIFMs since the issuance of the questionnaires on the 10th May 2013 making it one of the first European Union member state regulators to begin processing AIFMD compliant applications for hedge fund managers and alternative funds managers managing AIFs.

Sturgeon Ventures launches theme-based absolute return fund
Sturgeon Ventures, the regulatory incubator, has launched the Clerkenwell Matterhorn Fund, a theme-based absolute return, open-ended long/short fund with a long bias.
It will target a net total return of five to 15 per cent per annum by investing in real estate investment trusts and property development companies.

Regulatory incubator firm domiciles newest Malta fund
Sturgeon Ventures is to domicile its newest fund in Malta while another awaits regulatory approval as the London-based regulatory incubator firm continues to demonstrate its faith in the island.
This week, it will launch the Clerkenwell Matterhorn Fund investing in real estate investment trusts and property development companies. It is aimed at high networth investors, family offices and institutions in the UK and Europe.
The fund joins Sturgeon Ventures’ small but diverse collection of funds domiciled in Malta since 2010, predominantly professional investor funds, which managing partner Seonaid Mackenzie hopes will tell their “Malta story” as they grow.
Established in 1998 as an investment management advisory firm to a single family in the UK, Sturgeon Ventures began incubating firms in 2004 and moved into investment management in 2006. As a regulatory incubator, it enables start-up managers to sit under its wing as it shoulders the regulatory responsibility.

There are a number of consultancy firms in London that help hedge funds get going. The exact footprint of the firm, which areas they assist with, varies according to the background of the principles and the sort of people they are. Some firms started by accountants are very focussed on administrative systems and routines and audits. For firms where the principals have a legal background the start-up consultancies get involved in fund structuring. Seonaid Mackenzie’s background is as a stockbroker with a deep and abiding interest in private equity, so her firm, Sturgeon Ventures, does not look quite like others in the sector.
