Respecting the investors

Patricia Reynolds, Norcliffe Capital CEO, on her venture firm with a difference

Norcliffe Capital was founded on a simple but powerful belief: that venture capital can – and should – be done differently. Patricia Reynolds and her business partner Professor David Onions have designed Norcliffe to align with the highest standards of ethics, diligence, and respect for capital.

Norcliffe Capital works with financial advisers, wealth managers, family offices, private banks, accountants and individuals who are looking to directly invest in UK innovative life sciences companies with the potential to achieve exponential growth. Whether it’s £10,000 or £1million, the firm treats each investment with the same seriousness and transparency.

Patricia began her career at RBS at a time when retail banking was rapidly evolving. “The culture was shifting – ‘upselling’ and ‘added value’ were the new buzzwords, but to me, it was never about selling; it was about service,” she says. “If a customer was paying 20 per cent on a credit card and I could offer them 0 per cent, that wasn’t a pitch – it was a lifeline.”

During the next 15 years, she stayed with RBS, building a successful career that spanned personal finance, corporate and commercial banking, and eventually leading the advisor team across the North of England. However, witnessing the collapse of RBS from within during the financial crisis of 2008 and seeing the devastating impact on colleagues and customers left a deep impression. “I knew then I couldn’t be part of a system that lacked honesty and accountability,” she reveals.

She took a break from financial services and went on to be headhunted by a venture firm specialising in medtech and biotech. However, behind the scenes, she discovered troubling practices: hidden fees, undisclosed commissions, and investor capital being siphoned off without proper transparency. In one instance, a £100,000 investment resulted in nearly half being absorbed by the firm – far beyond the disclosed terms.

“I raised the issue with Professor David Onions, then a board member at one of the affected companies. David – a renowned immunologist, life sciences leader, and someone with unimpeachable ethics – helped investigate. We wound down the old firm and created a new one, where investors were protected, compensated, and could retain loss relief.

“David and I founded Norcliffe on a non-negotiable principle: to do the right thing. Whether someone invests £10,000 or £100,000, that money deserves respect, transparency, and ethical stewardship. David brings a wealth of scientific expertise – exits of over £100m, Chief Medical Officer at Thermo Fisher and a £350m management buyout under his belt. I bring the financial and operational rigour, the investor relationships, and the eye for governance. Together, we’ve created a venture firm that’s different.”

A curated, high-impact portfolio

Norcliffe backs 11 companies, ten of which are pioneering breakthroughs in life sciences. The firm reviews around 500 opportunities each year but invests in only two or three – each chosen after months of meticulous due diligence. The portfolio includes innovations in cancer diagnostics, glucose monitoring, cell and gene therapy, and regenerative medicine. Most companies are spinouts from leading UK universities – Cambridge, Oxford, Dundee, Strathclyde, and more – benefitting from Norcliffe’s strong partnerships with tech transfer offices and innovation hubs.

Norcliffe actively co-invests with top-tier institutions and family offices and fosters collaborative relationships across the venture ecosystem. Deals are structured with clarity, alignment, and long-term growth in mind. Investors receive detailed, timely updates, and governance structures are designed to ensure accountability from day one.

Investing for success

Norcliffe’s first medtech investments are expected to reach exit-stage by 2027, and preparations are underway to ensure value is maximised for all stakeholders. Meanwhile, the firm continues to explore high-potential ventures – particularly in underserved areas such as women’s health, where real-time hormone monitoring and chronic condition management offer the chance for both strong returns and can potentially transform the way menopause, fertility, and hormone-related conditions are managed.

Another challenge is improving gender diversity. “Across our portfolio, we currently have just one female CEO. That’s not good enough,” Patricia comments. “We’re encouraging better board representation and backing founders and leaders who reflect a wider perspective.
